The Philippines is one of the countries with the highest climate change risk. It faces severe impacts that span its environment, economy, and communities. While the country has implemented some policies to address these issues, its current adaptation and mitigation strategies are insufficient. The increasing frequency and severity of these impacts endanger the nation’s natural resources and the livelihoods of millions. This urgency calls for immediate adaptation and mitigation measures against climate change in the Philippines to safeguard communities and drive climate action towards a more sustainable future.
Climate change is having serious impacts in the Philippines such as increased frequency and severity of natural disasters, sea level rise, extreme rainfall, resource shortages, and environmental degradate. All of these impacts together have greatly affected the Philippines' agriculture, water, infrastructure, human health, and coastal ecosystems and they are projected to continue having devastating damages to the economy and society of the Philippines.
The causes of climate change are burning fossil fuels for energy, transport and industry releases greenhouse gases, which cause global warming. Things like farming, cutting down forests and overfishing are making it worse. There is no doubt that human activities are causing climate change, which means we are also able to stop it. Along with other human activities, like cutting down forests and farming, this releases heat-trapping pollution called greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, warming the planet and destabilising the climate.
But throughout this problem, the Filipinos didn't give up, hence they hepled each other to rise up again and to fight for climate change. Filipinos are known for their resilience due to a combination of cultural, historical, and environmental factors, particularly the strong importance of family and community (like the spirit of bayanihan), the necessity of coping with frequent natural disasters, and a deep-seated culture of hope, optimism, and humor in the face of hardship. The Filipino people have repeatedly demonstrated an unparalleled ability to rise above calamity with courage and unwavering unity.
